Medicare is the National Social Insurance program administered by US Federal Government since 1966 and currently uses about 30 private insurance companies across the United States. Medicare provides Health Care for US citizens aged 65 and older who have worked in the US and have paid into the Medicare system. Most Americans however are unaware that Medicare coverage is not available to cover health expenses during their international travel outside the US. The definition of ‘Outside the US’ refers to places other than the 50 US states, District of Columbia, the US Virgin islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana islands and American Samoa.
